Homeschool Speech Therapy: Does My Child Need This?

Homeschool Speech Therapy

Meet my new friend, Elyse Scheeler. A Speech & Language Therapist, Homeschool Mom and Group Fitness Coach! Let’s call this a triple WIN!

Oh, and host of the Speaking Life into Motherhood podcast!

Elyse also hosts a Homeschool Group Coaching Program for MOMS.

If you’re –

  1. Struggling to get your homeschool plan off the ground?
  2. Mom to a child with additional needs?
  3. Wondering if your child needs speech therapy?

Then, Elyse is your go-to guide for homeschool speech therapy.

When to Seek Help?

  • adults outside your family have difficulty understanding your child
  • your child has limited vocabulary
  • your three-year-old does not use a 3-word sentence (Example: “I want snack.”)

You, as a mom, are so used to anticipating your child’s needs, so pay attention to your family and friends when they make a casual mention that sounds like, “It’s a little hard to understand what she’s saying.”

Homeschool speech therapy can give you prompts to increase your son or daughter’s vocabulary.

If your 2-3 year-old is not linking 2-3 words at a time for a short ‘sentence’, then it may be time to consider homeschool speech therapy for your child.

How Speech Difficulties Affects Early Reading

When your child says the colour ‘red’ as ‘wed’, because she struggles to produce the /r/ sound, she will often spell the word ‘red’ as ‘wed’, because that’s what she hears. Early readers spell words by ‘sounding-it-out’.

Basic phonics, which is the sounds your child learns to match with alphabet letters can get tricky when your child has a speech impediment.

If you’ve been wondering if your child needs homeschool speech therapy, start now. Don’t wait. At the very least, book the first meeting, and the speech therapist can guide from there as to next steps (if needed).

Yours in phonics,

Melanie
