Organizing the whole FREE page system feels too hard, so you just don’t. TRUTH? If this sounds like you, there’s hope to finally get organized with phonics instruction. BUT, it’s going to take an ounce of intention and some serious willpower to turn over a new leaf as a mom teaching her child to read at home in 2026.

Let’s talk ‘FREE alphabet worksheets’ for a moment, shall we? As MOMS, I think we’ve all been tempted to take the easy route, the road paved with the best of intentions without actually being intentional. If we’re honest, we’ve all taken the road of least resistance, because it demands the least amount of mental bandwidth, which we may not feel we have to give in the moment.

In just 2 days MOM, it will be 2026. Will 2026 finally be the year where you STOP googling random free alphabet worksheets the night before, or maybe even 2 minutes before, you begin your reading lesson at home?

So, if you’ve been stuck in FREEBIE land, will you allow me to help guide you and your little reader towards reading success?

The TRUTH? You NEED to take 17 minutes [or less] each day where YOU are leading your child through fast-paced, highly engaging, no-fluff phonics skills. Leading your child through phonics drills where they increase automaticity and quickly recall the letter sound for you, quickly print the letter that matches that sound, listen while they read simple CVC words using the sounds you’ve taught, lead your child through a word chain, then give your son or daughter your full attention while they read the simple decodable text that is included as a printout for each lesson.

It’s time to get INTENTIONAL in your focus while teaching your son or daughter to read, phonics skill by phonics skill. I triple-dog-dare-you NOT to touch your phone during this time. Hard, I know.

So what, exactly are you doing during these intentional minutes spent focused on leading your child through actual reading and phonics drills? I’m going to lead you through the exact framework I use inside each phonics lesson.

This is going to go quick. Are you ready?

  1. Sound Awareness. Hand chopping. Hard to replicate on a podcast, but you’ll SEE HOW I do it inside the phonics skills tutorial videos. Your child is highly engaged, focused on listening to the sounds you say, so that he can correctly say a whole word. He wants to get this right. It’s like a sound game that is vital for reading and especially spelling.

2. Look and say. You show your child a letter. He says the sound right away. This intentional phonics drill increases his automaticity and quick recall of sound-symbol relationships he needs for reading and spelling.

3. Hear and Spell. You’re going to say a sound. Your child is going to draw the matching letter symbol you’ve taught him to correctly form. See how fast-paced and engaging this is for your child? No time gaps. Just using letters and symbols so that he can read and spell.

4. Blending sounds to read words. Your child will actually be reading simple CVC words by lesson 10. Yep. There is a grid of words based on the letters and sounds you’ve taught him so far for him to blend to read words. You’re actively listening while he is actively reading. Moving on to the next phonics skill in the lesson.

5. Segmenting sounds to spell words. If you had spelling dictations as a child, this is similar. You say a word. Your child repeats the word, using his oral segmenting skills which he practiced earlier to spell the word.

6. Word Chains. Keep going. This is where your child plays detective. He has to figure out which sound in the word changed to spell the new word you give. For example, the first word you give is ‘sap’. You say to your child, “Change a sound in ‘sap’ to spell ‘map’. Change a sound in ‘map’ to spell ‘tap’. Change a sound in ‘tap’ to spell ‘tip’. Change a sound in ‘tip’ to spell ‘top’. Add a sound to ‘top’ to spell ‘stop’. Add a sound to ‘stop’ to spell ‘stops’. Add a sound to ‘stops’ to spell ‘stomps’.

7.  Sight words. Because not all words can be spelled phonetically, according to HOW they sound. For example, the word ‘of’ sounds like you would spell it ‘uv’. So, we have to memorize this one. It’s a tricky word!

There you have it mom. That is HOW I intentionally lead a child through a phonics lesson. This is HOW YOU can lead your child through a phonics lesson. If you’re like, this sounds AH-MAZING, then head to phonicsrulesforkids.com/course , so that you can be fully intentional when teaching your child to read. FREE alphabet worksheets can be filler activities for AFTER you’ve intentionally spent 17 minutes or less focused on leading your child through phonics drills. The TRUTH IS MOM, IT TAKES YOU LEADING YOUR CHILD TO GET YOUR KIDDO OFF TO A SOLID START IN READING.

FREE alphabet worksheets have their place, but AFTER you’ve led your child through phonics drills at home.
